Investment Casting, also known as a lost wax casting, including wax pressing, repair, group of trees, dip, wax melting, casting, and post-processing processes. Lost Wax Casting is a wax mold made of wax to be cast into parts. Then the wax mold is coated with mud. This is called a clay mold. 
After the clay molds are dried, the wax molds are melted in hot water. The clay mold of the melted wax mold is taken out and baked into the pottery mold. Once roasted, normally, the mold is made with a gate, from which molten metal is poured. After cooling, the necessary parts are made.

Making Castings

The bronzes cast in this way have no marks or gaskets, and it is better to use them to cast hollow objects. Chinese traditional investment casting technology has a great influence on the development of metallurgy in the world. The China investment casting of the modern industry is developed from the traditional lost wax method. Although they are very different in terms of wax materials, mold making, modeling materials, process methods, etc., their process principles are the same.

Stainless Steel

The minimum chromium content of stainless steel is 10.5%, so it is more resistant to corrosive liquid environments and oxidation. When used in a liquid environment, the temperature of the liquid and steam is lower than 1200°F (650°C), and the stainless steel investment casting is “corrosion resistance”. When stainless steel is used at temperatures above 1200°F (650°C), it has good heat resistance.

Carbon and Low Alloy Steels

Carbon and low alloy steels are the workhorses of the mechanical world. No other class of materials offers as wide a range of mechanical properties as economically. Carbon steels are alloys of iron, carbon, manganese, and silicon. Using a special heat treatment process, custom investment casting parts with specific characteristics can be designed in different areas of the same part.

Aluminum Alloy

Aluminum casting alloy can be heat treated to achieve higher strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and workability. Aluminum investment casting alloys are commonly used in aerospace and industrial applications. Aluminum alloy has excellent castability, weldability, and pressure tightness. Usually used for complex parts with stricter specifications and smaller volume.

Copper Alloy

Copper and copper-based alloys are also commonly used in custom precision casting processes to make precision parts. Copper-based alloys are corrosion-resistant and have a low wear rate. More common types of copper-based alloys include bronze and brass. When we are considering CNC machining and/or forging as a manufacturing process for producing parts, pure copper investment casting is generally not used.

Ductile Iron

Compared with welding manufacturing and forgings, ductile iron is more flexible in investment casting part design and reduces manufacturing costs. Ductile iron has many “best in class” characteristics but is not always the most cost-effective alternative to other ferroalloys. Besides, ductile iron is widely used in many manufacturing industries, including agriculture, automotive, and aerospace industries.

Nickel-based Alloy

Nickel-based alloys are known for their resistance to oxidation and corrosion in harsh and high-temperature environments. The selection of a suitable nickel-based alloy depends on many factors, including the environment in which the nickel-based casting is used. Nickel-based alloys are widely used in oil and gas, medical, nuclear, aerospace, and defense industries.

Cobalt-based Alloy

Cobalt-based alloy is an investment casting material, which is mixed with nickel, chromium, and tungsten. They have excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance and wear resistance, and are very suitable for high-temperature applications. This allows cobalt-based alloy castings to be used in many industries. Including medical, aerospace, automotive, military, and other applications where the oxidation problem is severe and high in high-temperature environments.

Investment Casting Advantages

China lost wax castings have high dimensional accuracy, generally up to CT4-6 (CT10~13 for sand casting and CT5~7 for die casting). The process of precision investment casting is complicated, and many factors affect the dimensional accuracy of the casting, such as the shrinkage of the mold material, the deformation of the investment casting mold, the linear change of the mold shell during heating and cooling, the shrinkage rate of the alloy, and the solidification process Deformation of castings, etc. Although the dimensional accuracy of ordinary investment castings is relatively high, their consistency still needs to be improved (the dimensional consistency of castings using medium and high-temperature wax materials is much improved).

The shell is made of special refractory paint with high-temperature resistance and refractory material coated on the investment casting mold. The surface finish of the cavity directly in contact with the molten metal is high, so the surface finish of the lost wax investment casting is higher than that of the general casting, which can generally reach Ra.1.6~3.2μm.

The biggest advantage of custom investment precision casting is that because investment casting has high dimensional accuracy and surface finish, it can reduce the number of machining operations. It is only necessary to leave a little machining allowance on the parts with higher requirements, and even some precision castings only have grinding and polishing allowance, which can be used without mechanical processing. It can be seen that the lost wax metal casting method can save a lot of machine tool equipment and metal raw materials.

Another advantage of the lost wax precision casting method is that it can cast complex castings of various alloys, especially high-temperature alloy castings. For example, the blade of the jet engine, its streamline profile and cooling cavity, which can hardly be formed by mechanical processing technology. The production by lost wax investment casting process can not only achieve mass production, ensure the consistency of castings, but also avoid the stress concentration of residual knife lines after mechanical processing.
