How to Weld Die Casting Aluminum

Is It Possible to Weld Cast Aluminum?

Most aluminum castings are easy to weld, but die casting machines need to consider two aspects to determine the connectability of the castings. The first is the composition of the casting, which is made by pouring molten metal into a mold.

Aluminum casting alloys, such as 356.0 and 319.0, can be heat treated. These alloys can be welded as a base material with aluminum filler alloy 4043, which is preferably used as a filter. Other casting alloys (such as AlMg 535.0) cannot be heat treated, but filler alloy 5336 can be used as a filter for welding.

Another important aspect of determining weldability is the manufacturing method of the casting. Generally speaking, precision lost wax investment casting, precision high quality sand casting, and permanent mold casting can all be welded because all three methods pour molten aluminum into the mold with a relatively low thermal conductivity, thereby slowing down the solidification process.

The heat conductor paves the way for the penetration of molten metal during the solidification process of sand casting, investment casting, or permanent casting. When processing high pressure aluminum die casting, molten metal is injected into a steel mold under high pressure. During the curing stage, it passes through the vents and water cooling channels in the parting line.

Compared with other methods, the cooling rate of die-casting parts is relatively fast, so the dissolved gas in the molten metal cannot escape, thereby forming pressurized cavitation defects in the casting parts. Generally, welders will not find the inclusion of air pockets as internal voids in the casting during welding. They can hardly deal with the defects except for grinding them and repairing them.

How to Weld Die Cast Aluminum

1 .For the welding of die-cast aluminum, you can use TIG welding or MIG welding with the same brand of welding wire, or manual arc welding with welding rods. For welding rods, consider MG400 welding rods. For smaller workpieces, consider gas welding, etc.

2. Select argon arc welding. The welding machine should be an AC welding machine at a low temperature of 400 degrees Celsius. Use WE53 special liquefied gas porous spray gun, low-temperature aluminum welding wire WE53 welding thin die-cast aluminum parts, welding aluminum alloy at low temperature, effectively reducing deformation of thin die-cast aluminum parts during welding.

3. In the environment of low temperature 385 to 400 degrees Celsius, use low-temperature aluminum welding wire WEWELDING53 with special WEWEL.
